So here we are with our first review of the New Year.  We’ll be covering all the lottery draws that took place in January, so grab those tickets if you have any lying around and get ready to check them.  You could be a winner without even knowing it!

As always there were plenty of prizes on offer for the first month of 2009.  We’d all love to win it big of course, but even the odd small prize here and there is very welcome.  Be sure to check all the numbers and make sure you’re not missing out on some well earned cash!

Our first stop is the Lotto draw, and from there we’ll move on to all the others that took place in January.

For the purposes of this chart the bonus ball numbers have not been included.

So let’s take a look in closer detail at what happened during the main Lotto draw last month.  We had two draws where no one won the main jackpot, and two draws where four people shared the biggest pot.  That meant we didn’t really have any notable weeks where a lot of people shared the money.

It also meant that we didn’t have any tiny jackpot shares last month.  In fact, if you had scooped the jackpot on the worst possible week (which was on the 24th) you still would have got an amazing £1,396,228!  Four people walked away with that amount each on that date.  And the biggest jackpot share was reserved for the final draw of the month on the 31st, when one person bagged a cool £8,328,317.

So which numbers made more than the one appearance last month?  Well if you had any combination of these on your tickets, you would have stood a much better chance of getting some kind of prize.  There were plenty that came up twice – 9, 36, 8, 32, 15, 3, 28, 25, 29, 40 and 4.  Coming up three times each in total we had just three numbers – 37, 1 and 45.  The number 38 came up four times in total – but there was no stopping number 39, which came out an impressive five times!

But as usual we had other numbers which didn’t show up at all.  And for the month of January these were as follows – 2, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 30, 31, 34, 41, 44, 46, 47 and 48.  Notably there were a lot of numbers in the forties there that we didn’t see, as well as a good few in the teens.  Perhaps next month we’ll see the balance redressed?

We also had a couple of pairings during January, but the most notable draw of all was on the 24th, when we had two triple selections as our winning line - 24, 25, 26 and 38, 39 and 40.  Four people had picked those out as the winning line that week, and were rewarded nicely for their efforts too!

Other winners

So having looked at those lucky jackpot winners, how well did the runners up do in January?  Here is the lowdown on those who managed to pick five of the main balls plus the bonus.

On Saturday 3rd January, eight people netted a nice £195,680 each.

On Wednesday 7th January, five winners walked away with £167,104 each.

On Saturday 10th January, fourteen people bagged £92,430 apiece.

On Wednesday 14th January, four winners got £205,670 each.

On Saturday 17th January, eight people walked away with £192,384 apiece.

On Wednesday 21st January, six people got the right numbers to get £136,723 each.

On Saturday 24th January, seventeen lucky winners got £101,088 each.

On Wednesday 28th January, nine people picked the numbers to win £102,156 each.

On Saturday 31st January, ten winners got £164,315 each.

So we can see that the highest payout this time around came on the 14th, with £205,670.  The lowest payout was won by fourteen people on the 10th, who each got £92,430.  One thing that was clear this month was that there really wasn’t a huge difference between the highest and lowest payouts at all.  Sometimes there can be a huge amount between the two, but not this time.

It was clear that we had a much higher selection of numbers on the whole this month.  Out of nine draws in total only three weeks saw a single digit number appearing as the bonus.  So keep that in mind for future draws – we might see smaller numbers coming out too!

There was no winner on that first Friday of the New Year, which was why the jackpot was over fifty million pounds the following week!  And that went to one single winner too, who is presumably trying to figure out what to do with that amount of money…

Lotto Hotpicks

The main prize here is somewhat smaller than the fifty million we were just talking about.  It’s actually £130,000, although we wouldn’t turn it down!

There were two winners in December, and January brought one winner on the 10th, who was the only winner for the month as a whole.  Better luck next time for everyone else then!

Dream Number

The fact that there are just a handful of numbers to choose from when you play your ticket for this draw makes it sound easy to scoop the £500,000 prize.  But of course it’s not as easy as that – you have to get them all in just the right order as well.

One winner managed to get it right on the 14th, but that was as good as it got for the whole month.

Daily Play

£30,000 is on offer as the jackpot amount for every single day that this draw is made – which is every single day except for Sunday.

So was anyone lucky enough to get the right numbers during January?  Well as it happens two people did – one on the 12th and one on the 27th.  This seems to be about the best that we can hope for, mainly because not that many people play this draw compared to the Lotto draw.

We might yet be proved wrong and see lots of winners in a single month, but we doubt it!

Overall results

So there we have it – a detailed look at what went on during January as the year got off to a cracking start with the lottery draws.

We certainly saw some big jackpots here and there, mostly thanks to the EuroMillions draw.  That fifty million is still in the back of our minds, and we’re wondering whether we’ll see a jackpot bigger than that for some time.  Somehow we doubt it, but you just never know.

We also saw some interesting numbers being pulled out for the main Lotto draw.  There aren’t many occasions where you see two sets of triples being drawn for one single draw, although it has happened before.  We also think that perhaps we might not see the number 39 for a while now, since it came out so many times during January.  We could be proved wrong, and of course each ball does have an equal chance of becoming a winning one, but we’ll see.

Probably the main thing that many players think about each time they play is whether to stick with the same numbers each time.  We’ve all heard stories of people who do so and then change them the week that they are drawn, but are you better off trying different things all the time?

Everyone has a different opinion of course, but if you enjoy analysing the numbers that are drawn each week you might like to change things around a bit.

Whatever you decide to choose as your numbers next time, we wish you the best of luck.  Here’s hoping they are the right ones!
